Manusia sebagai makhluk sosial dan hidup bermasyarakat memrlukan komunikasi atau pertukaran informasi satu dengan yang lainnya. Disamping itu manusia juga perlu mencari informasi dari keadaan sekitarnya.

Untuk Hal diatas, Tuhan telah menganugerahkan panca indera yang merupakan alat utama dalam mengadakan komunikasi tersebut. Sebagaimana kita ketahui, cara perhubungan yang azasi adalah melalui pendengaran dengan telinga dan penglihatan dengan mata.

Akan tetapi jika hanya dengan mata dan telinga saja, komunikasi yang dilakukan oleh manusia hanyalah dalam jarak yang terbatas sekali.
Oleh sebab itu, sejak dari masa yang lampau dan sesuai dengan tingkat perkembangan cara berpikir, manusia telah senantiasa berusaha untuk dapat berkomunikasi dengan jarak  jangkau yang sejauh mungkin dengan menggunakan alat bantu tambahan.

Sebagai contoh, cara pemberitaan dengan genderang di Afrika, dengan asap oleh suku Indian di Amerika, ataupun bahasa bendera yang masih dipakai sampai sekarang. Semua itu merupakan salah satu tingkatan dalam perkembangan cara-cara dalam berkomunikasi atau berhubungan untuk saling bertukar informasi.

World Meteorological Day 2009

Weather, Climate and the air we breathe.

Each year, on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization, its 188 Members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme. This Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System.

This year, the theme is “Weather, climate and the air we breathe”.

Ozone update

The 2007 Antarctic ozone hole

Very low ozone values were again observed over the Antarctic in the austral winter of 2007. Vertical soundings over the South Pole during September and October 2007 showed near-complete destruction of ozone at altitudes between 13 and 21 km. Lower stratosphere temperatures in the winter of 2007 over the Antarctic region were near average levels. Accordingly, the peak size of the ozone hole was smaller than seen during some years of the past decade. Indeed, the size and depth of the Antarctic ozone hole will for the next couple of decades depend mainly on the meteorological conditions inside the south polar vortex.
